10 Health Benefits of Whiskey

All the health benefits of whiskey you wish you knew earlier… you’re welcome:

Whiskey is one of the best alcohols you can drink. Not only is it the least likely to give you a hangover, but it’s also one of the healthiest around. You’ll find that having a few fingers of whiskey every week can help to:

  1.  Avoid Weight Gain — Whiskey is a low-calorie alcohol, especially when compared to the many cocktails, beers, and wines you can find on supermarket shelves. You can drink a tumbler of whiskey without worrying about packing on the pounds thanks to its low sugar content.
  2. Boost Heart Health — Did you know that drinking whiskey can actually make your heart healthier? Aside from wine and dark beer, what other alcohols can claim that? Not only will whiskey reduce the risk of blood clots, but it will lower your stroke and heart attack risk as well. The antioxidants in whiskey stop cholesterol from clogging your arteries, and it can even boost your good cholesterol.
  3. Fight Cancer –– Whiskey is rich in antioxidants, particularly one known as ellagic acid. This antioxidant stops your body’s DNA from coming in contact with cancer-causing compounds, reducing the risk of carcinogens forming. It can also protect your body from chemotherapy, and will reduce oxidation in your body.
  4. Improve Brain Health — A study conducted in 2003 discovered that drinking whiskey reduces your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. If you’re worried that your brain is slowing down in your old age, it’s time to start drinking whiskey to protect your very important organ from damage.
  5. Reduce Stroke Risk –– Whiskey not only helps to prevent cholesterol from building up in your arteries, but it can actually help to get rid of any cholesterol present in your blood vessels at the moment. It will also help to relax the walls of your arteries, ensuring that your blood can flow without obstruction. One of the greatest health benefits of whiskey is the reduced stroke risk, and we can all drink to that!
  1. Fight Stress — Stress can cause a wide range of health problems in the human body, but thankfully we’ve got whiskey to kick stress’ butt! Whiskey helps to reduce anxiety and stress, calming your nerves and helping to relax your body. It can increase circulation throughout your body, providing your organs with fresh, oxygenated blood. A serving or two of whiskey can help to calm stressed nerves effectively!
  2. Boost Memory — The antioxidants in whiskey can help to improve the health of your brain, and the circulation-boosting effects of this alcohol will boost your memory at the same time. The same properties that help to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia will also keep your brain active and young.
  3. Aid in Digestion –– Did you know that whiskey has long been drunk as a digestive aid? It was usually consumed after a meal, helping to relax the body after eating heavy food. It can also help to shut down your appetite, preventing you from overeating. Best of all, it will aid in digestion, reducing your risk of stomach ache or indigestion after a heavy meal.
  4. Lengthen Lifespan –– Whiskey is loaded with healthy antioxidants, and these nutrients can help to increase your lifespan by reducing your risk of disease. By protecting your body against disease, you prevent the slow breakdown of important cells in your body–thereby helping you to live longer.
  5. Great for Diabetics –– Whiskey is a zero-carb alcohol, so you can drink it without worrying about the effect it will have on your blood sugar levels. If you suffer from diabetes, a finger or two of whiskey will be the right choice for you!

Barack Obama dons a Santa hat and hands out gifts in surprise visit to D.C. children’s hospital – The Washington Post

Columnist for The Reliable Source

Watch out, Santa: Former president Barack Obama is coming for your sleigh.

With a fluffy red cap and a bulging bag slung over his shoulder, Obama delivered presents (and more than a few gasps) to the young patients at Children’s National hospital in Northwest Washington on Wednesday.

First on Obama’s list was a group of patients 4 and up who were making snowflakes in one of the hospital’s playrooms. After the excitement died down, the former president handed out jigsaw puzzles (which were his grandmother’s favorite, he told the crowd), Hot Wheels sets, remote-control cars, and glittery nail polish, among other goodies collected by Obama and his staffers. Hey, the guy knows his audience.

“I know they will be talking about it for years to come,” said Kurt Newman, chief executive and president of Children’s National Health System. “At such a busy time of year, when no one wants to be in the hospital, his natural warmth lifted the spirits of those kids, their parents and of each staff member he met along the way.”

Obama Claus also dropped by individual patient rooms for one-on-one visits with children and their parents. He gifted one 12-year-old patient who was nervous about heading to high school next year a piece of advice: “Even the cool kids don’t have it all figured out.”

Before leaving, Obama thanked the staff for working during the holidays and recorded a video message to be played on the hospital’s internal TV system for those he wasn’t able to visit during the trip.

Only a handful of the Children’s National staff knew that the president was coming to town, but word spread quickly during the 90-minute visit. By the time he was headed for the door, a crowd had gathered at a nearby nursing station. The group of doctors, residents and nurses cheered for Obama before busting into an impromptu rendition of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

October Is National Eczema Awareness Month. Skin Care Tips You Can Use

According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 15 million people in the United States are affected by eczema, a disease that causes dry, itchy and irritated skin.
Thankfully, there is an increasing number of resources and products created to help those living with eczema.

One such organization, the National Eczema Association (NEA), has a Web site dedicated to promoting eczema awareness through research and education. One way they’ve spearheaded getting the word out about this common skin condition is by designating the month of October as National Eczema Awareness Month.

What Is Eczema?

Flare-ups of eczema result in a dry, red skinrash that is not only unsightly but can be unbearably itchy, embarrassing and difficult to hide. Typical symptoms of eczema include skin sensitivity, red rashes, severe itching and even dry, flaking patches of skin that can crack and bleed. Eczema can be isolated to one area or present on several areas on your body such as the hands, inner elbows and the back of knees.

Eczema often runs in families, and can be triggered by allergies, stress, irritating detergents, synthetic fabrics, and cold. While eczema usually appears during childhood, it can develop at any age. For anyone suffering from extremely dry skin or eczema, there are some tips experts recommend:

Avoid Sudden Changes in Temperature or Humidity: Changes in temperature can cause skin to flare, so steer clear of cold temperatures and hot water, which can strip the skin of moisture. Consider investing in a humidifier for the home, to keep air moist.

Moisturize Properly: Keep skin hydrated with a dermatologist-trusted moisturizer that’s fragrance-free and specifically formulated for sensitive skin, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment, which is a rich, nonirritating moisturizer that locks in moisture to the skin, helping to alleviate symptoms of eczema. To calm extremely dry skin, experts recommend the “soak ‘n’ seal” solution: Bathe in lukewarm water for about 15 minutes with a gentle, nonirritating wash. Immediately after, apply a moisturizer such as Aquaphor to damp skin to lock in lasting moisturization.

Steer Clear of Eczema Triggers: Minimize eczema symptoms by avoiding triggers that may lead to uncomfortable flare-ups, like excessive scrubbing and toweling. Also avoid scratchy materials like wool, harsh soaps, detergents, and environmental triggers such as pollen or pet dander.

Some Ideas On The Topic Of Caring For Cats – Health Womens

Cats are curious creatures. Cats prefer to be near you most of the time. They are very perplexing animals; however, it does feel nice when one is purring on your lap. Read on to find out what makes them tick.

Cats often view small spaces as a fun challenge. If you keep a collar on your pet, getting stuck in one of these spaces can be very dangerous. A breakaway collar will let go if it is pulled on too tightly. Purchasing one could be the difference between whether your cat lives or dies when he gets stuck.

Do not allow your cat to get an electrical shock. Spray them with bitter apple, and they will stay away. If your cat likes to chew cords, hide the cords as best you can. Loose cords can be bundled and tucked inside old paper towel rolls. If you have electrical cords laying out that are not being used, put them away as cats can play with them and then move on to live electrical cords.

Your cat’s claws can wreck havoc on your furniture. Think about a scratching post or kitty tower if your cat’s claws become a problem. They can scratch this instead. It may take some time and some corrections, but it can usually eliminate the problem.

If your cat seems to want to avoid his food bowl, try getting a different kind of bowl. Plastic can sometimes turn a cat off if it isn’t cleaned constantly, and can hold on to certain scents. Try glass or a metal bowl for best results, so your cat will keep eating.

To make sure your kitten is properly socialized to humans, begin early in his life, about ten to twelve weeks of age. Be sure that he is handled and petted by humans in his family and by others as well. When he is older, he will be a calmer, friendlier cat.

If you have more than one cat, you should have as many litter boxes as you have cats. If too many cats have to share the same litter box, it can mean disaster! The cats may choose not to share their eliminating space, instead, using other areas, such as clean laundry or hidden corners of the home to do their business.

Feeding them lots of different foods can lower their chances of becoming finicky eaters. If you feed your cat the same food all the time, your cat will likely be uninterested any any other brand or flavor.

Cats’ curiosity often puts them in risky situations. Something as simple as a necklace, window pull, or phone cords can cause your pet to become injured or even killed. These items should be bound securely so that they are not a source of temptation for your inquisitive pet. Many childproofing aids work just as well for your kitten.

If you live in an area that is populated by wild animals, such as coyote and fox, you may need to make you cat an indoor cat. Wild animals pose a real threat to cats, and to avoid the loss of a beloved pet, it is sometimes best to keep them indoors for the course of their lives.

Entertain your cat with simple “toys” made from household objects. Many cats enjoy exploring boxes, such as those that hold 12-packs, small appliances, or other products. Before allowing your pet to play with a box, you should be sure that the animal cannot get stuck in small openings or tight spaces. This would be dangerous and very frightening to your pet!

Cats are puzzling, but they are also very rewarding. Allow the advice this article contains to help guide you on a path to a happier life for you and your pet. When you know how to take care of your cat, you’ll both be happier.

My Mate Says That Cigars Are Made ONLY in Cuba! – Health Womens

My mate says that cigars are made only in Cuba, is he correct?
No, Although the cigar business was started 150 years ago in Cuba, cigars are now made in several other countries. Many Cuban nationals fled the country during the early years of president Castro’s regime and continued their trade in the surrounding countries such as Honduras, the Dominican republic, Mexico, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Brazil.
Montecristo is one of the most coveted makes of hand made Havana cigars, and you can pay more than $400 for 25 with a ‘ring gauge’ of 52 and a length of 6.5″.
Just in case you were wondering, the ring gauge is the cigar’s diameter measured in units of 1/64th’s of an inch. So a ring gauge of 52 means a diameter of 52/64″. You can buy Montecristo cigars at lengths between 4″ to 7.5″ and at ring gauges of 26 to 52. The cigar’s outstanding flavor comes from the ‘ligero’ tobacco leaf.
Q1. Quality cigars are sold in special rooms at airports, is this just another sales gimmick?
The atmosphere in these shops is kept constant so that the cigars can keep their best flavor. A humidity of 70% and a temperature of 70 Farenheit (21oC) is maintained in these rooms. At low humidities and high temperatures, the cigar dries out and goes brittle. At high humidities, mildew can form to ruin the cigar. Some cigars have been kept in perfect condition for 50 years using the correct atmospheric conditions!
So, these rooms are not a sales gimmick,
Q2. I cannot carry an air conditioned room around with me, so how do I store my expensive cigars?
Use a carrying case called a Humidor. It has its own water vapor supply and a hygrometer to check the humidity. The best lining for a Humidor is made from Spanish cedarwood. If your cigar is losing its wrapper or crackling when you cut the cap, then its too dry. If there is a musty smell or it sizzles when you smoke it, then the cigar is too wet.
For use in the short term, tubes or finger cases can be used.
Q3. As well as the maker’s Brand name what do these other names mean?
Robusto, Toro, Presidente and Churchill are thick cigars.
Lonsdale and Pantela are thin and long.
Corona and Rothschilds are medium gauge cigars.
Others include Triangulo, Diadema, Perfecto, Torpedo and Culebra.
Q4. The BEST alternative to Cuban cigars are?? ?
Usually Dominican such as Corojo 2000 or Breton Corojo cigars.
Q5. As a general rule are ALL Cuban cigars the best?
No, Cuba makes a lot of mediocre cigars and there is a flourishing trade in counterfeits.

Losing Stomach Fat – Winning Your Battle – Health Womens

This is a battle that millions of people around the world go though. The battle is losing stomach fat. With all the temptation that is out there with fast food and it being so easy just to give into it, it’s really hard to lose it.

There are some people think that there is a conspiracy theory out there that government puts this stuff out to make it tougher for us to not spend our money. Now personally I don’t know about that however but that’s for another time and place.

Losing stomach fat isn’t easy, we know that. However it can be done if you have a few things in place, and it can be done quicker than you can ever imagine. However those things in place have to be firm and you have to stick with it.

Pick out a good diet plan, there a plenty of them out there however choosing the right one is tricky. Remember not everyone is the same, so that means what might work for your best friend, may not work for you.

A couple of the diets that would work would be a low carb diet and lean protein diet. Low carb food would be grilled chicken and a salad. Really anything grilled would work just make sure it has nothing on it. Lean protein would be turkey breast, chicken breast, egg white.

Now you have the diet in place; now it’s time to pick out a good workout routine. This can be as tricky as finding a good diet. The reason is you have to find a routine that works for you, you do not want to get into something and then three weeks later get bored of it.

This type of thing happens all the time; people get burned out because they lose interest and frankly just aren’t having any fun. Having fun is really a big key part of your success so make sure you pick something you are going to enjoy doing.

The types of exercises that are out there a dime a dozen, and like I mentioned before, it’s just picking the right one. For instance, jogging is a great way to lose that bulge, and if jogging is a little rough on your joints and bones then a brisk walk is just as good. It’s all about getting your heart rate and metabolic rate going through the roof.

Once last thing that will help you get rid of that stomach is finding people that want the same thing you do. Not only will it be fun to have those people around, you can lean on each other when things are tough and you all can help each other make it through.

There you have it, the plan is out there, all you have to do is go get it.

Reporter was locked in mental hospital for 10 days, when her true identity was revealed, the doctors were shocked

Elizabeth Cochran Seaman was born on May 5, 1864, but if you don’t recognize that name, she’s better known as the journalist Nellie Bly.

She grew up in Pennsylvania and as a young teenager she already wanted to work and have a career.

Elizabeth’s dad died when she was young, and after his death, Elizabeth helped support her mother and her 14 siblings.

Elizabeth didn’t like the idea that women could only benefit society by working at home, so, she decided to make a difference out in the world instead.

Wikipedia

After reading a columm in the Pittsburgh Dispatch called “What Girls Are Good For,” Elizabeth got so upset that she wrote a letter to the editor.

The editor, George Madden, in turn, was so impressed by Elizabeth’s submission that he asked her to write an article for the newspaper.

She did, and after Madden read it, he offered Elizabeth a permanent job and gave her a pen named: Nellie Bly.

As Nellie Bly, she wrote about women’s issues and women’s rights, which was unusual because back then, articles intended for women were normally about fashion, society, and gardening tips.

Elizabeth often wrote investigative pieces where she went undercover to places like sweatshops to expose the poor conditions that women worked in.

But after a while, Elizabeth’s editors moved her to the women’s pages and she decided to leave Pittsburgh for bigger opportunities in New York, writes Biography.

Life in the big city started out difficult. Elizabeth went four months without work. But then, she managed to get a job at the New York World newspaper. One of her first assignments was to go undercover at an infamous mental hospital.

Facebook/FernPimraveeWongphunga

Almost no one who was admitted to the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island left and there wasn’t really any other way of finding out what conditions inside were like.

Although the infamous hospital’s employees had long been rumored to be abusive, no one dared testify to that effect.

So with the promise of being released after 10 days, Elizabeth took on the hardest assignment of her life.

But even though she knew it would be awful, Elizabeth could never have imagined how bad it would actually be.

Facebook/AbandonedHistoricProperties

The hospital housed twice as many patients as it had room for. Meals consisted of dried uncooked bread, spoiled meat, watery broth, and dirty water. And there were rats everywhere.

Elizabeth pretended to be mentally ill, but she described the conditions at the hospital as being so bad that it was enough to make a person actually insane.

In addition, Elizabeth met several women who weren’t at all mentally ill, but were just poor or unable to speak English.

Patients were abused, beaten, tied up, and forced to endure being doused with ice water in place of showers.

Doctors refused to believe patients who complained about the abuse, and those who did complain were punished.

Women who were actually mentally ill weren’t given the care they needed.

Facebook/GraveMatters

As promised, a lawyer came for Elizabeth 10 days later.

After Elizabeth’s groundbreaking book on her time at Blackwell’s Island, “Ten Days in a Mad-House,” was published, the government enacted the changes she recommended and the patients’ situation improved significantly.

Elizabeth, herself became famous around the country. She continued to write important articles, and thanks to her celebrity, her articles helped change society. She continued to write about poverty, politics and other issues that women previously had no opinion about.

Elizabeth inspired many young women before dying of a stroke in 1922 at the age of 57.

Two years earlier, she experienced the joy of seeing women finally get the right to vote.

Facebook/Women’sRightsNews

Elizabeth accomplished a lot in her short life.  Please consider sharing this article to help raise awareness about her life and achievements. Let’s inspire more people to stand up when things aren’t right!
